Two names come up constantly in Kerala Ayurveda: Dhanwantharam Thailam and Murivenna. Both are excellent oils — but they're formulated for different purposes. Here's how to tell them apart.
Dhanwantharam Thailam
Named after Dhanwantari, the Ayurvedic god of medicine, this oil is a general Vata-pacifying formulation prized especially for:
- Postnatal recovery massage (see our postnatal care service)
- General body massage for joint and muscle nourishment
- Supporting recovery after prolonged illness
- Neurological and musculoskeletal Vata disorders
It's a broad, foundational oil — often the default recommendation when there isn't a specific injury or acute condition to address.
Murivenna
Murivenna translates roughly to "wound oil" and is specifically formulated for:
- Injuries, sprains and post-trauma recovery
- Nerve-related pain, including sciatica
- Fractures during the healing phase (under medical guidance)
- Localised pain relief rather than general body massage
It's more targeted — think of it as the oil you reach for after a specific physical trauma rather than for a routine wellness massage.
So which one do you need?
If you're looking for general wellness, postnatal recovery, or a broad Vata-balancing massage — Dhanwantharam Thailam. If you're recovering from a specific injury or dealing with localised nerve pain — Murivenna.
